In these rough economic times it seems to be the ‘Ma and Pa’ places getting hit the hardest, but surviving because of the strong desire of the community to shop locally. But what makes shopping locally so much more appealing? San Francisco especially has protected its local city charm by thriving on new local designers. The Mission is known for it’s locally owned businesses and one of a kind designers just waiting to make it big. Our customers have become aware that by keeping their dollar in the local community they are creating three times the impact that dollar has. Shoppers are sustaining and creating jobs, but also promoting the community development. Lately we have noticed people falling more in love with the idea that only a hand full of people can ever have the clothing they are wearing if the piece is by a small designer. It gives that unique higher end quality, but at a lower cost. Knowing that only 20 pieces are made of each style are put onto the selling floor makes it even harder for your friends to show up wearing the same thing as you. Shopping locally means you are also getting a more personal experience. You are often receiving more attention than the average store, which makes it a one of kind shopping trip. Hi Sunhee Mooner’s!

My name is Marie. I am one of the newest Sunhee Moon girls. I graduated from San Diego State University. Several attributes that I love about Sunhee Moon products are the pockets that blend in with the clothing! Many of the dresses here are one of a kind and versatile (they have pockets too)! As a stylist, I like to experiment with putting outfits together and seeing the different looks you can come up with. The same dress at Sunhee Moon can be molded into 4 different styles with just the change of accessories, which is really exciting to me. I really love the positive energy of the customers at Sunhee Moon, its made me fall even more in love with fashion, which I never thought could of happened. I was born and raised in Osaka, Japan. I have been living in San Francisco almost 3 years. While here I have graduated from FIDM and fell in love with the city. From my first job when I was younger and still living in Japan, I have worked in a boutique. I always wanted to experience different things and meet new people, so when I graduated from college, I moved to
New Zealand and Vancouver BC and finally to San Francisco. Fashion is everything to me, so working with Sunhee Moon has been fantastic! Your Body Length!!

Styling people everyday I have repeatedly got the question “what kind of body do I have?”, or “What should I wear, I have these hips!” ...The first thing to realize is that you can be whatever shape and length, but still look Amazing! It’s not about turning your body into something it’s not; it’s about loving what you have and working with it! No one, even the body dolls we used to play with. We ALL have flaws! The first step to loving you body is defining your lengths. There are 3 main lengths and 6 main shapes. It may seem confusing, but once you learn which length and shape you are, it’s easy to pick the right clothes and look great!
The first body length we are going to check out is people who have short legs and a long torso. This means that you hip length is shorter than the height of you body. You have a long torso and typically this will make you look bottom heavy. So here are some tips for dressing for your body. Draw eyes upward by wearing great jewelry and scarves. This will give an illusion that your body is more balanced. As for tops, try them tucked in! Try shorter, layered tops. Take a look at the Alika top at, it great for this body type because it adds that small amount of distraction up top, but it’s not to long! Also, try a tomo belt, or a wide leather belt tied on the empire of your waist to break up the distance between your shoulders and hips. Try a straight skirt or hem your pants all the way to the ground giving you a look that you have longer legs. There are always clothes that won’t flatter you. You may want to stay away from these! Don’t wear cropped pants, this can make your legs look even shorter. Stay away from pants or skirts with a dropped waistband, or things tight or tapered.
A balanced body is one with the torso and legs being equal. Your hip line will be half the height of your body. Again wear jewelry and scarves bringing your attention upward, but try more simple looks. Mid to long, un-tucked tops work best. You want your clothes to flow from the waist. Straight or flared skirts and pants are super cute on your body! Stay away from short tops and wide belts. They will make you look to even. Don’t go for the high wasted pants either.
The last length is to have long legs and a short torso. This means the your hip line is longer than half of your total body length. A great way to check this is to bend your elbow, if your hips reach the crease of your elbow you most likely have this body length. Wear design details on the body such as prints or features that draw your attention to the length of your legs. Mid to long length shirts and accessories will give you a more proportional look. Tucking your shirt in will make you appear to have a short torso, so un-tuck without looking sloppy. Shirts and dresses that flow from your waist with a narrow waistband will look very flattering. Low rise or hipster pants will make you more proportioned. Stay away from short tops, wide belts that sit at the hips, pants or skirts that sit high on the waste and pin stripes.
The idea is to always play off of what you already have! Love you body and make sure you look great. Knowing your body helps you pick out clothes that fit correctly with your body! All you need now is to know your shape! Then you can combine your shape with your length and find out what not to wear, but better yet, what to wear! Check out our next blog to find out your shape! With the Holiday Season upon us it is very easy to loose sight of what it is truly about. Love, thanks, freedom, no matter what form we see these things they are there. All around the city we can see it. Sometimes we don’t notice what we have, but its there, peeking out in its own little way. That is what I why I would like to take the time today to thank you. The Sunhee Moon customers, loyal bloggers, and all who are glancing at this right now, Thank You. Without you we would not have this great company. We are so proud to have the customer following that we do. Our customers are so loyal to us and we could not be more grateful. Our customers walk in knowing that they will be treated like we treat our best friends, with honesty and love. We try and learn everyone by name, to make sure that you as a customer feel special. I am the newest member to the Sunhee Moon team and I would like to say that I am more than thankful for the opportunity to be here! Not only have the girls I work with taught me so much, but the customers too. Each day I learn something new, gain more confidence, and style the most beautiful ladies in the city. So, thank you Sunhee Moon and all of the customers that follow us. I love the people I’ve met through my time here. I am thankful to have the opportunity to be here, writing all of you. And as for freedom, everyday I wake up, go to my closet, and decide what to wear, that in itself is freedom in a small way. Maybe if you have extra food from a restaurant, take it to go and let a homeless person have it. It may be the only good meal they get on that day or for a few. Smile, at someone as they walk down the street, a smile can make someone’s whole day. Hug your family, and if they are not here with you, calling them and telling them you miss them would let them know you are thinking of them. Let’s all go out of our way this season. Warm our hearts and say thank you more. Work at a soup kitchen. Inspire others. Be the shoulder to cry on that so many people need through this stressful time. Let me know what you have done! I want to hear what you have done! Who knows, maybe you inspire me to help extra too!

Summer of (Bike) Love

Now that summer is *FINALLY* here that means we can bring out our wildest pieces and maybe jump into a new trend. One trend that is surprisingly fresh and interesting to me is bike shorts.

Now, bike shorts you say, otherwise known as cycling shorts, are back in in the hip fashion community. It has a very 80's 90's LA gear sort of look. Young, hip girls and guys are wearing them with tees and tunics, even under mini dresses. Personally I love the look, as long as its pulled off right.

But it's not just the Tricot Nylon cycle shorts from memories of grade school that have come back, but in tons of other fabrics as well. I love the baby rib knits and lace too!

Now how can we the "not-quite-as-hip" crowd pull off this fashion forward look without feeling like your going to ride in the Tour de France?? The first step is choosing the right color or pattern. Choose something neutural, not in a bold print, unless your planning on balancing it with a dark solid. Then, just substitute them anywhere where you would wear leggings. Feel like a dress is too short? Or have to ride your bike to work? Make a fashion statement and feel like your outfit is socially acceptable by having them peek out just a bit under the hem of the dress. Add them under those short shorts too, for a little more coverage (Plus the layering effect looks super cool!). The key is to keep the top layer short, very short so that the longer short doesn't look dowdey.

This reminds me of the underground pop music clubs in London, all electric colors and stretch fabrics. I'm about to invest in my first pair, a vibrant neon green pair from American Apparel. Although I am soon going to buckle and buy a lace pair too.

Ruffle Obsessed

My new Ophelia Dress is the best! I originally fell madly in love with the ruffle neckline, I guess I am a bit ruffle obsessed. I contemplated over color for a few weeks and then decided the navy would be mine! I felt entirely chic last night going out to a special occasion dinner. When asked, "Which restaurant to you want to go to?". I answered "It doesn't matter as long as they have wine." Yes, I was that excited to show the new dress off.
We ended up going to Antica Trattoria, a sweet cozy Italian restaurant and wine bar by Russian Hill. Not only was the night romantic and the food quite delicious I might add, but I felt beautiful and sophisticated while gulping my white wine and finishing off the crumbs on my plate. I even received compliments on my dress, "It's Sunhee Moon" I would say. Even a day later with less primp and without heels I still feel great working in my Ophelia Dress. I can already tell I'm going to wear the seams off of this one. It's my new favorite classy little number.

How To Tie a Tomo

As the resident Tomo Queen, Sunhee asked me to create a visual how-to (click to see full-size images) for all of our ladies out there who love their suede and sateen dual-sided Tomos but have no idea how to wear them. Here are a few tricks of the trade:

Place them at the smallest part of you, whether that's at your belly button, just below the ribcage, or around your six-pack. This will draw attention to the slimmest part of your body, creating that hourglass silhouette that we all covet.

Make sure the Tomo lays completely flat at the start, whether you begin your tie in the front or the back.

If you can't loop it around twice, opt for a sexy double knot in front with longer ends.

For an Asian-inspired obi look, tie it right in front. For a sophisticated twist, shift it off to the side.

Can also work as a low-slung belt around the hips.

Britni also wears it as a neckerchief and a headscarf. (She's gonna kill me.)

To add visual appeal, you can try tucking the ends behind the double-knot, creating a rose-like finish.

Tomos look great over monotone dresses, fitted button-downs, over high-waisted skirts, and as a cincher for tunics that need a little something extra. In fact, here at Sunhee Moon, we think it looks great with everything which is why you see it on our mannequins all the time.

Roadtrippin'

Preparing for being on the road means I'm finally getting my Coco Cowl in Oxblood. We'll start on the West Coast in L.A., head up to the Pacific Northwest all the way to Vancouver before turning east. September and October in SF might mean an indian summer but on the East Coast, I know it's going to be super chilly and I will have my faux cowlneck handy to highlight the blush in my cheeks and frame my cute little chin (though I've always been told by my mom that my head is shaped like an egg - she meant it as a compliment :/).

Where am I going? Well. A secret dream of mine came true, and I'm going on tour as the cellist of the band, Sea Wolf. I won't say much more since this is the SunheeMoonGirls blog, but hopefully I'll be back in action in November with all new exciting adventures to tell and styles ready to show!

We were also asked by the band's stylist to name some of our favorite brands, and aside from Sunhee Moon of course, I discovered Dear Creatures - Knee-high socks, mod cuts, minidresses, button details, and my outfit cannot be complete without a beret or beanie!

Anyway, before I get too longwinded here, I wanted to say thanks for being the faithful of all blogreaders and I look forward to seeing you on my last day at Fillmore, August 31.

HI! WOW! I got tons of compliments at the fundraiser AND I wore the same outfit to a wedding here in Nairobi last weekend and astonished my friends who normally see me in Birkenstocks and jeans! Am surpised you remembered me and it goes w/out saying that the next time I am in SF I will DEFINITELY stop in the shop and pick up some more items. (By the way - I did find the perfect shoes to go with the tunic...they were in my closet here in Nairobi! Brown leather with a bit of a heel). I am actually quite amazed that there is a designer out there that makes clothes to fit me - if Sunhee Moon ever makes blue jeans with the same cut as the two pairs of pants I bought, send me an email! (I should have bought another tunic and a different colored belt...ah well...next time!)

chicisimo.com - Online fashion blog where people can post their own outfits and the outfits of other fashionistas. It includes the brands of the items they are wearing as well. It also lists the hottest trends of the season and groups them by catagory for searching ease.

shopstyle.com - Online shopping resource. You can browse by style, trend or brand and this amazing site will search hundreds of websites for items that fit your search criteria! It offers all different price points and when you're ready to buy, simply click on the item to be taken to the store's website. You can also save your favorites in your own stylebook and create your own personalized looks! Great when you want to play dress up but don't feel like putting on your pearls and heels!

refinery29.com - Fashion news for the refined shopper. This site has everything, shopping blogs about writers' favorite items on ebay, places to shop (although, mostly for the NY area) hot trends, runway photos, lots and lots and lots of unknown and new designers and everything in between!

ebay.com- Online auction site. I personally like it for vintage and designer items at low prices (trust me, if you keep looking, you'll get a steal) and a way to be kind to the environment by reselling your old pieces instead of sending them to a landfill.

Fall Trend Alert: Neckwarmers

Be one of the first to sport the hottest trend in neckwear - the neckwarmer!!! They are coming in all shapes and sizes and have been spotted on runways all over the country! Here are a few of the different styles I've seen:

They come in all different shapes and sizes and materials. My favorite is the circle scarf, a version of a traditional scarf sewn together at the ends to make a circle. The best part about it is its versatility. I wear mine long as an accessory, a scarf necklace you could say, or double it and feel warm and cozy on cool evenings. If it's misty and not quite raining enough to bring my umbrella, it becomes a chic hoodie, and all that fits neatly in my purse. No more fussing with the ends, dragging it on the ground, or fringe balling up.

SMoon Spotlight: Stephanie S.

Stephanie S., visiting from Kenya where shes does non-profit work, dropped by the store last week on the assignment of her sister, who said she could ONLY go into shops whose names she did not recognize. No more GAP or LL Bean or J. Crew, she was told.

I had the pleasure of working with Stephanie and helping pick out an outfit for her fundraiser later that evening. Stephanie immediately gravitated towards the Page Dress in Brown Paisley. We matched the dress with the Merlot Tomo and she loved the fit of the Mias in 3 so much, she added them underneath. After our first outfit, she was already so thrilled with the look, she called her sister in amazement.

She also picked up the Abigail Wrap and loved it worn backwards as an easy boatneck top.

It was so awesome to see her excitement about the fabric, the fit, the cuts, and recognizing that her marathon-experienced body looks fabulous when she chooses to show it off. Even the next lady who walked in marveled at the bright-eyed energy Steph left in the store. So thank you Stephanie for stopping in and making MY day, even though you said I had made yours. (And for coming back and picking up those NYLA shoes, haha).

Fillmore Jazz Fest Pics!

The Jazz Festival always one of the funnest weekends out of the year, and it was made even more fun thanks to it falling on Independence Day weekend. I ran out to Pier 39 Saturday night to see the fireworks with a few friends from Dublin and Montreal, respectively, and enjoyed stopping by Carrie Saxl and Mark Poulin's booths both days. Mark told me "You're crazy!" when I bought yet another necklace for a friend, while Carrie very kindly replaced a chain on a necklace I bought from her at the Union Street Fest. Also had a brief interview with Channel 4 mid-afternoon Sunday, but who knows if it aired at 5pm like the cameraman said - I don't own a TV! :/

This weekend also brought on the champagne as we served mimosas for customers as they shopped, although I think we could've let the bubbly flow a teensy bit more :P. (We have quite a backstock of champagne but that's always a good thing to have around.) I have really been enjoying helping all of you wonderful customers and friends who stop by to try on Sunhee's designs everyday. Will be featuring a special custie from Kenya tomorrow on the blog, and maybe we'll put together a photoshoot in September with some of our favorite ladies in their favorite Sunhee Moon garb.

Hope you ladies have as much fun in the shop as I do.

Of course it is the independence of our nation but we'll also be in the midst of the Fillmore Jazz Festival and we're getting ready to enjoy the festivities! A Beautiful One-Year Anniversary

Hello out there!

It's a little overdue, but I'm going to pretend that today is my "one year anniversary" with Sunhee Moon, because, it almost kind of is. It was back in May 2008 that I finished my first year at Berkeley, searched the jobs section on Craigslist using the key word "Fillmore," and found lo and behold, that there were openings available at Crossroads, lots of doctors' offices, and here at Sunhee Moon.

And then I walked by Crossroads, looked in, thought it looked so disorganized and crazy that I would be unhappy working there, and then kept walking until I found Sunhee Moon, back when our girl Casey was manning the store. She welcomed me in, had Michael Jackson on, and encouraged me to still send in my resume and give it a shot, even with my utter lack of retail experience.

I tried on the Malea Dress in Butterfly Filagree (a terrible terrible choice for me and my chopstick straight body haha), as well as the Mirabel in Black Medium. I had no idea what I was getting into when Casey tied the Teal Tomo around my waist and gave me some Kylie Wedges to finish the look. That Mirabel and I were in love and you'd hear me rave on and on about it in these blogs. The other girls quickly learned that a Mirabel on a mannequin meant Joyce had been there.

Many months later, your long-haired Japanophile Union St. girl endured a quarter-life crisis, quit her graduate program, came back to work in February '09 altogether a happier, brighter, more beautiful version of herself (or so many tell me with my chopped off hair :P) and able to be in a place where she is doing everything she absolutely loves.

What started out as a "summer job" (in my mind, shh! Don't tell Sunhee!) turned into one of the greatest opportunities for growth that I've encountered in the Bay Area yet. And I never knew I would be styling and encouraging women to celebrate themselves and their lives as part of my day job.

So thank you Sunhee for the opportunity, thank you Britni and Trish for picking up after me when I make mistakes, and thank you who are reading for giving me the opportunity to share and connect with you.

I didn't even know we had a Facebook page... okay, maybe I shouldn't be saying that. But here it is. If you love Sunhee Moon, you can become a fan here.

So, the new Zuryna Dress is finally up. I don't think anyone knows how to pronounce the name (Zer-een-uh)except for my sister, and maybe me - her real name is Alisa, I call her Baleezi, and Zuryna is her adopted European (or Czech?) name she uses in Prague, where she's studying cinematography. She also has an adopted Korean named, Mihyang. Maybe I'll be able to convince Sunhee to let me call something else Mihyang, but what I would really love is for a future cut of the Baleezi Pants to come out, a cut reminiscent of MC Hammer's crotch-to-the-ankle balloon pant in red. I know they'd never sell, but just for the sake of calling something Baleezi, I'd love to wear them with my own version of the Boyci Bowling Ball Shirt in Orange. Yes, none of these things will ever get cut under the Sunhee Moon line but if I had my own Joyceleepee line of clothing, all I'd do is make crazy, unattractive, goofy looking pieces inspired by the name and personality of all my loved ones, hahaha.

Alright, so let's get back to Zuryna. This dress is whimsical, a little irresponsible, but always up for fun and mischief no matter what night of the week it is. If length is a concern, go up a size (transitions from mid-thigh, to above the knee). Otherwise, especially for the young'uns out there who want to show a little leg, this is the PERFECT dress (even better than the Mirabel) to crash your best friend's wedding with. Heeheehee. Which I plan to do at the end of the month...

Photoshoot June 2009

We had an impromptu photoshoot here at Sunhee Moon 16th last weekend before opening the store last Saturday morning. Trying to match up good outfits that would pop on film (or really, your computer screen), along with choosing some clean compositions proved to be a fun challenge - and thanks to my friend William for lending his Nikon D80 expertise to the set, we got some great shots!

My lovely Moongirl colleagues could easily freelance modeling as a side gig, don't you think? Here's Britni looking fresh in a Savannah Top with a Lime Shelby on bottom and Trisha showing her sweet self in our Cate Tunic in Black Pear. (Trisha's going to kill me for posting this pic, but too bad. Boy am I glad I wasn't making a fool of myself in front of the camera, hehehe, since I do that in the stores everyday anyway:).)

I'm hoping that next time we can use some of our custies (i.e. You!) in these shoots. This one took about an hour, were shot on location at the store, and basically involved 3 wardrobe changes total. Makes me miss my film days in undergrad. Ahhhh totally fun. HAHahhaahaha. More pics to come soon.

Scarf Weather

The June gloom has begun. Those warm days are now hanging in my not so distant memory, and the tan lines are fading. As a newbie to our wonderful fog city, I half expected the balmy weather. I began to scoop up scarves and use them as accessories in anticipation for cooler days. Those accessories have now become necessities. Yes, my neck is begging me for the cozy comfort of a cowl. As I watch women pass by the storefront they walk bundled, hands in pockets and heads held up by woven fabric. The others hurry on with drooping heads almost in need of a fabulous fluffy friend bundled around their necks.
I love that SUNHEE MOON gets that. This is San Francisco, it is balmy, and women still need to hold their heads high. That is why we have such a vast array of cowls and scarfs. For the funky(koi scarf), for the chic(cahmere scarf), for the hipster(rene cowl), a neck wrap for all. It's the signature neckalce of Fog city.Oh the excitement of being chic and snuggly. It's never been a better time to be a San Franciscan and a Sunhee Moon girl all at once.

Okay, so it's not completely brand new but you may have noticed our blog has been on hiatus for a few months. We apologize for being gone for so long! Closing one store, bidding farewell to a few beloved girls and saying hello to new ones has kept us busy here at 16th Street and Fillmore, but now we are back and ready for action!

It has always confused me on what woman like to wear and what they are comfortable with. We are uncomfortable with our bodies and no matter what kind of figure we have we continue to think we are fat.
We complain that we don't want anything clingy because it will show our bellies, we don't want to wear anything billowy because it makes us look pregnant. Either we're too old or too young to wear a certain trend, or too tall, too short to make it work.

Here's the thing.... we are all beautiful and created differently so that we do not look like every girl walking down the street. Style is based on confidence and comfort. What matters the most is that your clothes fit your body and represent your personality.

We all have our own likes and dislikes and your choice is more valuable than anyone else's. Magazines, models, and even store mannequins are visual ideas that you can take and make it your own. Forget about society's expectation for the universe.

I am bummed that we are closing our Union Street store. The fashionable, trend-setting, boulevard of buzz and beauty has not looked like itself in recent days. Ironically however, as I am writing this, the rain is clearing up and a beautiful ray of sun is peeking through, casting that familiar sexy glow on this perpetually “It’s Summer” street.

Here is my ode to Union, who we will be leaving at the end of this month:

The search is on...

So my newest obsession: brown all leather Chuck Taylor Hi-Tops. Ok, ok, so maybe Chuck Taylors are seen as the dingy sneaker everyone wore out when they were 16, but I've seen the low-top version of this dark all leather shoe on my best friend (he wears them with trouser pants and they look so chic!) and now I am absolutely craving a leather hi-top. Imagine, the comfort of this classic sneaker but done up in the ultimate wear-with-whatever material leather! And in a dark espresso brown!

Now some would suggest to me to buy a pair of Doc Martins, but I'm just not that kind of girl. Hi-top Chuck Taylors offer a slimmer boot-esque style and are definitely not bulky. I could easily wear these shoes with a pair of thick black leggings and a floaty tunic top, or with a jersey mini-dress and tights, or with skinny pants and a simple t-shirt...oh the list could go on!

The only question is...who knows where I can find them?!?!

I was definitely the little girl who was a tomboy growing up. At the age of 6 my mom bought me a bathing-suit with ruffles around the waist with pink polka dots. Each time I went to the swimming pool, I'd beg her not to make me wear it.

She would always pick out dresses and skirts with tights in an array of colors to go with everything. I'd get so upset when I had to wear tights I'd purposely rip them so that I wouldn't have to wear them at all. I know... I was so bad.

Now it's seems like the only time I would not wear tights is in the summer when it's warm. I feel so naked without them. I love wearing bright colored tights with dark colored dresses and textured tights if I'm feeling a bit daring.

I'm not as tanned as I used to be so it definitely covers up my flaws, plus it keeps my legs warm when I wear dresses in the winter. I think it also looks sexy when I wear tights with shorts and boots.

I guess tights aren't just for little girls anymore.

My sister came into town last week, visiting from Prague via Monterrey, Mexico (she was there for a film workshop; she studies cinematography in the Czech Republic). Unfortunately, a couple days of insecurity, sadness, fear and self-loathing are owed to her, as she chopped off my hair (it's been perpetually long after I was traumatized by the boy cuts my parents used to give me), from my comfort zone high school ponytail length into a mod bob of sorts with heavy fringe. I barely even recognized myself (she made me wait until after she was done to see) and tried to hide my disappointment, even as she cowered in the crevice of the living room couch, already prepared for my negative reaction. Now I understand what it's like to go through the makeover on America's Next Top Model (ANTM, I promise I don't really watch this on my days off). HAh.

The strange thing is, the cut definitely IS starting to grow on me (Thanks MoonGirls for keeping my confidence up!) - the only reason I even relented to do a hair chop off was my sister's insistence that I dress so stylishly now, with a penchant for the swinging days of the 60s -- I should have the hair to match!

And now I do . . . sort of. Any other ladies out there brave enough to go for a chop?

Fur your consideration...

I am super thankful and fortunate to have recently spent a week in New York (last week) catching up with family and best friends. As I have been visiting NYC with some regularity since age 4, I have gotten most of the touristy activities out of the way and can now just concentrate on spending time with people in their favorite neighborhood haunts. This trip I spent a lot of time in Brooklyn with friends, which was an awesome but slightly surreal experience of a place I've long associated with my Grandma, who lived there for years.

While traipsing through Williamsburg, fueled by cupcakes and coffee, my friend James and I found ourselves seized by an unusual fashion mission ... the search for the perfect vintage fur coat. Maybe it was the familiar, rejuvenating cold weather getting into my blood, or the memory of a photo of my Grandma in her twenties, standing on her Brooklyn sidewalk wearing a monkey-fur coat, but I must have tried on at least twenty coats that afternoon.

I know wearing fur is a contentious issue among many a fashionista. I would never buy a new fur coat, but if it's vintage, the proverbial damage has already been done, right? And there is something so glamorous about pulling a fur coat on over your t-shirt and jeans; it's an instant fabulizer. James aptly decided that white or light grey furs are a bit too Russian-snow-princess, and that anything with legs or heads attached were a tad Miss Havisham-ish, creepy. The closest we came to perfection was a mid-length warm brown coat with long sleeves and a small collar. I couldn't justify a fur purchase that day (I fear the wrath of SF animal rights activists, plus its simply not cold enough here to warrant that kind of gear), but someday I hope to add one to my wardrobe!

While I was in New York I also saw former Sunhee Moon girl CAROLINE on the subway -- a random but fortuitous encounter as I was making my way out to the airport! Made me miss that girl so much! Caroline we love you! Keep on doing your thing there in NYC, come back and visit too!

Ode To The Mick Pique Pant

The first thing I ever bought at Sunhee Moon were the black Mick Pique pants. I tried them on, and immediately knew that these pants were MADE for me. I know a lot of women feel that way about Sunhee's pants, cause she's expertly tailored various styles for every imaginable body shape. But the Micks! They've pretty much put all my other pants on the back burner. Never mind that I have three other pairs of black pants which at one point or another felt like they were the ultimate black pant, but now, I can hardly get myself to wear any other pants at all, black or not black.

The pique fabric is stretchy, but not so stretchy that it starts to sag or create those knee pockets that my bony knees seem to permanently create in every other pair of pants. Not to mention it goes with absolutely everything in my closet. They look great with flats, sandals, heels (although I never wear them) and tucks perfectly into my favorite pair of boots.* They look great under a little tunic, or even paired with just a basic t-shirt. In fact, every time I wear my Micks with a t-shirt and little black flats, I feel just like Patricia from the film Breathless by Godard (minus the short blond hair, the stack of New York Herald Tribunes, and Jean Paul Belmondo trying to convince me to escape to Italy with him).

So basically, I love my Micks and might have to buy another pair just to make sure I have a back-up pair just in case...

What the ..... happened to my boots!

OK so I've only had these boots for a few months. I got them during a close out sale, so the price for them were dramatically inexpensive. It's been about a few weeks since I've worn them and today I decided that they are the pair I'd wear to work.

I'm already an hour into work and I couldn't figure out all the click clacking noises underneath my shoes. I looked down and there's a crack right in the middle of the soles! What the.....!!!!! How?!!! When?!!!! I have no idea. I'm too afraid to walk around in them cause they might split deeper.

It's cool, I'll just take them to my favorite shoe repair guy on Haight and have him fix it. He's so nice too! He'll fix anything. I've even asked him to shorten the strap of my bag, sew it and add more holes to it. Ugh.... now I'm just trying to figure out exactly what happened to my boots.

I feel you Joyce! So embarrassing!

Well, not anymore. Yesterday morning, after the torential downpour subsided,while I was casually walking to work (well, not so casually I was a little late. :I ) my favorite pair of flat, brown boots failed. You know the pair that takes months (if not years) to find, flat with a slight heel, slip-ons with no zipper, faux croc fleur-de-lis detailing on the top of the calf and the heel and a little gold strip right above the heel. These boots, that went with everything, and were perfectly distressed from years of wear completely broke on me! (Can shoes break?) The entire sole came unglued and started flapping as I walked. I nearly tripped and fell in a puddle the size of the lake in Golden Gate park. The way to work was quite comical, my boot seemed to be saying "Help, Help" "Help, Help" as it hit the wet pavement in not one but two movements. Unfortunately I had already worn a gaping hole in the heel of it around December of last year as well. In order to make it home I had to tape the sole to the bottom of the boot with duck tape! It's ok, it gives it character right? So now the hunt is on for the new pair of brown flat boots, I think this year I would like something a little bohemian instead of the 80's rocker vibe I mostly wore last year. Something with a little fringe, maybe a slight heel and in suede? Does anyone know where I can find my dream boot?? I'll check the local vintage and resale stores: Clothes Contact and Idol Vintage in the Mission, Wasteland, Decades, and Held Over in the Haight, Crossroads, My Roommates Closet and Buffalo Exchange. But I fear I will need to do much more searching in the hunt for my new boots. I don't think Ill get rid of the old ones yet. They still work for those sunny days, maybe I'll start a collection. We'll see....

So I guess it's my turn? HAhahaha. I've never "had to" celebrate Valentine's Day, and most of the time, I don't even realize it's Feb. 14th, until it's already passed. Haha, so I suppose it's fitting that I'm writing this after the fact.

Pretty much, I just knew there was a pillowfight going on in front of the Ferry Building at 6pm. Afterwards, after my lame 10 second attempt at hitting one of my friends (I feel terrible bopping people I don't even know who have never done anything to me!), we walked down to Polk to partake in a lovely Thai dinner, then over to a Mediterranean spot, for some hookah and light belly-dancing. Then to the Castro to play wingwoman for all of these fine-looking gents. By all accounts, I think we had a superb Valentine's; I didn't even realize single people hated the holiday.

There were two years in middle school when my mom bought my sister and I Beanie Babies on Valentine's Day. For no reason except to say I love you. I used to make her I love you heart-shaped cards, even in high school. And then I tried tearing one up once and taking it back from her during this stupid fight later that year. Haha. Sorry, Umma.

In any case, what this post was REALLY supposed to be about was: I love our customers. I really do.

I know it sounds like I am sucking up, but here's the deal. When you guys come in, I just feel like I have a reason to live. HAHAHA. Otherwise, I am standing inside a boutique for 8 hours, not to fold clothes, or organize backstock. A robot could do that. I'm here because I love interacting with people, I love meeting you and knowing who you are and helping you choose the best pieces and fits that match your style.

Annie J. came in the other day at Fillmore after she got my postcard; she bought the "flying-off-the-racks" Ondine Jacket, and is a huge SunheeMoon fan - as shown by her Lanis in Persimmon and Grey. And just now, on this dreary wet Tuesday (I reread my blog last week to give myself some "perspective"), Miss Margaret G. stopped in, gathered me in her whirlwind of energy on the search for that perfect Lani, and left giddy with the longer-sleeved Alika and our red checked scarf.

When you ladies (and gents shopping for your significant others) come in, it makes our day. We welcome you, your energy, your presence, because you are what brings the Sunhee Moon line to life, here in San Francisco, in NYC, Tokyo, London, Calgary, Nashville, Texas, and down under. Hearts, Stars, Rainbows! Clovers and Blue Moons!

For some reason I always anticipate Valentine's Day to be like an assortment of lucky charms - colorful, magical, super sweet and a little fattening. Don't get me wrong, it usually is a little fattening, but it always ends up being a little too cheesy of a "holiday" (is it even a holiday?) for my boyfriend and me. I totally agree with B-Dizzle (read her post below)...V-day shouldn't be the only day you show some lovin' to that special someone.

But in any case, I try to make it a little sweet for myself just so that I don't seem like a protester of Love Day. My favorite thing to do for myself is buy new comfy underthings! I love lounging around in the comfort of my own apartment in some good 'ol boy shorts, a tissue-soft tank top, and a warm snuggly sweater. I'm also thinking of buying some sweet silk slips with pretty lacy details to wear under my dresses for an added layer of warmth while I'm trotting around the city.

It's the little things, like pretty underwear, that make me feel extra special, even when no one can see or tell why!

To me, Valentine's day is just like any other day. My boyfriend and I do make an effort to do something a little special on that day but we prefer to show each other our love throughout the year. After all, I love him everyday, not just on February 14th. But aside from showing someone else how much you care about them, don't forget about number one. Here is some of my favorite ways to treat myself:

1) Buying new nailpolish. I always dress up but never get my nails done (in fact I tend to bite my nails and therefore dread going into the salon), when I buy new nailpolish in a funky new color I feel like a brand new women! I truely feel put together with my tips painted and my hands look great too! Nailpolish is just like anyother accessory, it totally can finish your look.

2) Cheese and Wine. Do I really need to say more....oh, can Godiva chocolates.....

3) Ditching the friends and spending time with myself. Great friends are always there when you need them but the only way to truely be happy is to be able to exist on your own and make yourself happy. You can't wait for someone else to make you happy.

4) Going above and beyond when I get ready to leave the house. Somepeople might think its a little ridiculous, to wear heels to the grocery store but I love the feeling of looking lovely. It makes me feel beautiful, just like a women should.

I could name so much more; buying fresh produce from the farmers market, supporting local artists, staying in my pj's all day on a rainy day, but what you do isn't important. What is important is that you treat yourself to something everyday. You deserve it.

I'm not a big fan of Valentines Day. Never have been. Probably never will be. That doesn't mean that while everyone else is buying their girlfriends Jane Hollinger heart necklaces and their boyfriends...what DO people get boyfriends for V-Day?...I'm just gonna sit at home and boycott.

I'll probably wake up and make one of my favorite breakfasts of all time: strawberry chocolate chip pancakes with whip cream and (can't forget!) bacon on the side. Pancakes are the best cause you can put pretty much whatever you want in them (a quality I don't hesitate to experiment with) but for some reason nothing hits home like the fruity chocolatey goodness of strawberries and chocolate chips. The bacon on the side gives you the savory break you'll need from the sweetness, and let's face it, who doesn't love bacon? Who knows what I'll end up doing the rest of the day, but starting it off with a full stomach and satisfied palette is good enough for me. I do it not cause it's valentines day, but cause I deserve it, and so do you!

So if you wanna treat yourself, your friends, or your special someone, do it! My trick is to put the strawberries in the batter so they don't stick to the pan. Then you can drop the chocolate chips into the pancake while it's cooking. And butter...can't forget the butter...

(Sigh)Fortunately... I love myself enough to feel okay that I don't have a date for Valentines day. whahahahah! Though I am calling all my family members to let them know how much I love them. Especially my 12 year old nephew who thinks I'm so annoying because all I do is tell him I love him.

I was thinking I could take myself to get a mani/pedi and get a deep spa massage for my tired feet. Afterwards wait in line for a mouth watering chocolate croissant at Tartine, so I can feel sweeter than I already am, and then call all of my best girlfriends to watch the movie " He's just not that into you!" ahahahahahha

Though for all the girls who are sharing the day with their love ones, have a great Valentines day! Let them know how much you appreciate and care for them. Maybe even pick up the tab if you really love him!

Party Girl

I watched Party Girl over the weekend and I think it's my new favorite movie. For those of you who haven't seen it, it's a mid-90s flick with Parker Posey playing Mary, a 23-year old who pays her rent by throwing parties in her warehouse apartment. She's a club gal with a colorful cast of friends - a hopeful DJ, identical twins with oompa loompa green hair, and a love interest in a Lebanese falafel-cart owner.

True to form, I loved the movie because of her great outfits. She wore mostly high-waisted shorts or skirts (mini) with brightly colored sheer tights, low boots, and any number of outlandish tops. Mary is a clothes horse, and while the bright colors only accentuate her exuberant personality, there are pieces of vintage that harken to a dark past -- both of her parents have died, and we can only assume that the beautiful clothes are her connection to her mother. Long brocade coats, suits, and a velvet 1920's evening gown round out her wardrobe. One of my favorite outfits was a huge white fisherman-knit sweater worn with skinny black leather pants. When she wears it with her hair in an Audrey-esque updo to sell her clothes for money, it is reminiscent of that sad scene in Breakfast at Tiffanys, when Holly is busy knitting and readying herself for a new life in Brasil, but later finds out her marriage is off. Like Holly Golightly, Mary is a beautiful but slightly tragic figure.

So... Party Girl isn't necessarily going on the "Best Movies for Fashion" list. And it's not so much that I want to wear her clothes in the exact same configuration. Mostly, I like seeing the different silhouettes. I love the huge top over skinny pants trend (just as popular now as then), and the high-waisted shorts look, though maybe not with tights. I'm feeling a bit stifled with my wardrobe and am looking to do a major overhaul soon, so any inspiration helps. Hopefully a quick trip to New York will shock me (with cold + fresh fashion) out of my mid-winter slump!

Hello Ladies of the SunheeMoon Blogosphere!

It is your beloved most excellently nerdy (2nd only to Lo :P) Moongirl herself, Joyce! After having the past few months off to regroup and visit the parents in Korea, I'm back in action, ready to rock and roll!

I don't know why I titled this "Back in Black (and chartreuse)" - I think it is because I am wearing a black crossfront cotton dress from Muji (the equivalent of IKEA in Japan except they also sport a clothing line) accented with a green scarf and the phrase is reminiscent of some of the better known "return" phrases such as "Backstreet's Back, alright!" or "I'll be back" (credit our current governor) or "Guess who's back. Back Again. Joyce is back. Tell your friends."

Okay, so I modified that last one but the point is, I am back, up and running and having a ball at Union today despite the grey skies and occasional drizzle. Have had a few custies in from Calgary and others from Chicago who say this weather is GREAT and an escape to warmth compared to what they live in back home. So who's to say that this weather is a downer? It's all perspective, isn't it?

So let's whip out our brightly colored galoshes, an oxblood Coco Cowl, some Dita Pretender Sunglasses and for what to throw on top, hey, I'd pick the gorgeous new perfect-for-SF-winter-weather Ondine Jacket (ahn-dine, I had to ask how to say it too), try it over a Qi cashmere turtleneck with a Trudy Crepe mini and tights underneath. Make the weather a reason to enjoy the day and take advantage of all the cute rainy day accessories that have been craving your attention in the back of your closet!

And let's not forget tomorrow's WE HEART THE MISSION shopping day!

Simplicity

Is there a difference between being fashionable and looking put together?

When I first moved to the city, I would wear the funkiest outfits thinking I would blend in. I thought that I had to showcase my personality and how different I was. The whole point is to be different right?

Now that I've adapted, I've realized that my wardrobe has simplified. My clothes are hugging my body in the right places, I wear innovative colors, that look clean and attractive and I'm not piling on accessories. My clothes are the focal point.

Of course I still layer my clothes, but less is more. Having sleek silhouettes and a splash of color is a good combination to attract attention. I want people to notice how put together I look, not how hard I'm trying to get noticed.

A good sense of style should come from within. Wearing big name designers don't make you fashionable, it's how it fits that should. And those Jimmy Choo shoes are amazing, but does your feet hurt when you walk in them?

Keep it simple.

I spy with my eye...art school attire!

I've always been a keen oberver of the way girls at art school carry themselves and what they wear. Having attended art school since high school and being one of them myself, I feel like I can spot one a mile away!

I've come to the conclusion that there are three types of art school girls: the Fashion-Forward, the Grungy Eclectic, and the Vintage Betty. Now, this is not to say that art school girls are limited to these three types, but generally it's safe to classify them as the above mentioned.

The Fashion-Forward girls usually don't get involved with the messy arts, like sculpture or painting, as the materials used in these mediums could stain their clothes! They have this low-key, non-chalant vibe about them and are usually seen clad in all black. The way they wear their all-black garments is so effortless but you can tell that they are low-key sporting some high-end avant garde labels, like Comme des Garçons or Maison Martin Margiela, or something of the like. These girls are either photographers, graphic designers, or fashion majors.

Next up, the Grungy Eclectic girl! This is the most bohemian type among the art school girls. She's most likely a painter, a jewelry maker, or a sculptor, which means she doesn't mind getting her clothes gritty. She's the type to wear her good ol' beat up Converse high tops with everything - peasant skirts (yes, she still wears those) to denim cut-offs to paint-stained 501 Levi's. She doesn't care how she dresses because she's a free spirit, and will wear any color and any style of clothing, even if it's three sizes too big on her!

Lastly, we've got the Vintage Betty. I admire this type of art school girl the most because this kind of girl has such sophistication in her vintage pairings and chooses her pieces so wisely. There's a soft, dainty-ness in the Vintage Betty's style: small flower patterned blouses, high-waisted above-knee skirts, lace-up oxfords, and choice leather accessories...let's not forget the classic Ray Ban Wayfarers! I think this girl is the perfect inbetween mix of the Fashion-Forward and the Grungy Eclectic - logically puts together her outfits with style and comfort in mind, takes all kinds of different art classes and doesn't mind the ocassional drip of paint or gold leaf speckle onto her patterned trousers 'cause she feels it'll add a touch of character.

So those are my observations of the species of art school girls. I still need to figure out which category I fit into because sometimes I'll find myself looking a certain way one day, and then having a completely different look the next day. Maybe you can spot a few of these types of girls on your next trip to Dolores park...we seem to always hang out there.

The Inadvertent Accessory

This weekend I was completely struck by a couple walking down Valencia street. They caught my eye from across the street, engulfed in a golden beam of fading afternoon light. They both had that Mission je ne sais quoi... a mix of sharp accessories, vintage, and new clothes that seemed to say "We may look Bohemian but really are high-paid graphic designers/architects/advertising execs." Their clothes were great, but there was something else about them that really caught my attention.

The man's hair was cut just below the ear and was combed back, allowing full view of his aviator sunglasses. He was wearing a vintage cordouroy sport coat in a warm earth tone, and was holding in his right hand a burnt-orange colored leash. At the end of this leash was their ultimate accessory; what totally grabbed me from across the street: a beautiful dog.

The dog was very sleek, with short brown-gray fur and an athletic, hunting-dog body type. It trotted ahead of them gracefully, weaving its way through the crowd as if on the trail some invisible animal. As I was watching them I couldn't believe my eyes...this dog actually accentuated their outfits! With the man's English-sporting inspired outfit and his companion's worn leather boots, I wondered if they dressed to match their dog, or if their dog was simply an extension of their great style.

It's no secret that San Francisco is a dog-friendly city. Everyone that has visited our 16th Street store has met Izzy & Juno, and knows that they are just another reflection of the homey, comfortable vibe we like to create in the store. Your animal speaks a lot about your personality and can be a wonderful (loving, slobbery, sweet)complement to an outfit.

Now I'm not saying to start toting your dog around a la Paris Hilton. But remember that great trio -- and know that something that already gives you unconditional love and devotion can also set your style on another level as well.

Trend Spotter.....or Stalker....

I don't know about you ladies but I am in a fashion rut! The weather is dreary and my closet is less than bulging at the seams as I tend to clean out my closet on a regular basis. (Thanks to my day's as a buyer at a clothing buy-sell-trade store.) And have been feeling my regular old 'duds just aren't cutting it these days.

On the verge of a new season, my mind goes straight to cotton summer dresses, vintage silk screened tee's, and an assortment of new denim pieces when I think about what to wear each morning. Unfortunately the pieces of clothing in that I own are sub-par to what my mind creates. Whenever I get to feeling like I'm wearing the same 'ole thing I'm always on the look out to see how other San Francisco fashionistas are fairing.

With this, every off day, or adventure out of my little studio in the TL turns into a stakeout. Wating...watching....every girl who passes in my range of sight. I look at every detail. The dress, the print, the shoes, the bag, the accessories, the makeup, the hair and scrutinize it all behind my dark vintage Christian Laboutin lenses. Sometimes I stare so long that my boyfriend, who often comes along for his own trendspotting purposes, tells me to just go up and ask out the girls that I've been looking at. I blush for a minute and then continue quietly with my investigation.

Sometimes I see the same old thing, or trends that have been building up for a while. Like high-waisted wide legs, now I see them in a variety of fabrics and styles. Big sunglasses are still in, as are opaque tights and american apparel everything. Then other times Ill see something completely new! I love the Aspen cardigan trend I've been seeing on colder days, big lumpy sweaters with trees strewn across the bottom look so fresh and new! So do rockered out chiffon and pretty cotton prints. Beat up boots and holey tights with a cute button up dress is among my favorite trends so far this spring. But it will take a while for all the new trends to surface from among this hodgepodge of cold and warm weather. So until they're clear I will stalk my favorite spots to stop and watch: Delores park, sitting outside at Ti-Couz in the mission (right near the Sunhee Moon store!), downtown near the financial district where art school and business meet, and of course, all the hip girls shop at Trader Joes. There's a managerie of other places where you can catch a glimse of some up and coming trends too.

When my detective work is over I go back home and re-evaluate what I have already. And ten times out of ten my studies for the day will lead me to the answer I've been looking for, a new way to wear my clothes. Suddenly, my old 'duds aren't so old anymore....

During these rough times we've been dwelling on lately... I urge everyone to put out all there favorite records, Cd's, cassettes..... hell even 8 tracks (if it's possible) and just listen.

Let it take you to another place where your heart is completely free of doubt, negativity and sadness. Allow it to bring back the good times you've shared with your family and friends. Reminisce about your high school sweetheart or the first time you've borrowed your mom's jewelry without her knowing. Feel the warmth of being able to sing the lyrics of your favorite song growing up.

Music is part of every ones lives. I guarantee someone has wrote about your life once or twice and felt the same way you have. Let's not forgot how music has a huge impact on how much the world has changed through politics, religion and fashion. If your a musician yourself... share your dreams with everyone else.

Stay positive, keep dreaming and sing your heart out!

Inauguration Fashion!

Alright people, its a fashion blog, so don't judge me... I just want to have a quick gush about today's Inauguration Outfits!

I went to Civic Center with my friend Abby this morning to watch the proceedings on the big screen. Surrounded by a few hundred of our fellow San Franciscans, we definitely got caught up in the spirit of Obama's first day. Watching him stoically walk out to the crowd by himself, his sweet little flustered moment taking the oath of office, and all the other inspiring and strong speakers who shared the stage really enlivened my patriotism and optimisim about our country's future.

A big draw for me to watch the inauguration in such grand style (aside from the obvious reason) was Aretha Franklin's performance. I know the US is a democracy, but I can't help but pledge allegiance to the Queen of Soul. This morning she was a force of vocal talent, but also a force of millinery with her awesome hat. The chic dove-gray cap with large bow in front was such a great example of classic style dressing, and the blue crystals (at least they looked blue from where I was standing!) gave it a little Aretha flair. Also: shout out to Lady Biden for her great red coat!

And can we just talk about the Obamas? When Malia and Sasha walked out and Abby saw their outfits she exclaimed aloud "Is she wearing pink and red together? BOLD!" Yes, they may be young, but those girls have style to spare. With Michelle for a mother, how could they not! Abby and I were both stunned to see her wearing such serious jewelry in the mid-morning. But hey, she's the First Lady. I'm happy to play by her rules. She looked great in her yellow outfit -- it looked kind of Chanel-y to me. Though maybe a bit bright for their palette?

Anyway -- the colors of the day are RED WHITE AND BLUE! Be happy America and let your optimism shine in the way you dress and how you act.

One of my oldest and dearest friend is having a baby shower and out of the four best friends I had growing up, she is the first to deliver. I am very excited to see her and cannot wait to be an auntie.

She lives in Las Vegas and works with major VIP clients, knows all the hot spots and can get us on the list with any where (she better!!!). Which leads me to what I'm going to wear? Of course the baby shower will be conservative yet stylish, but what about getting into the club or going to dinner with the girls. Ugh!!!!

Living in the city makes me insecure about showing body parts because we're always layering our clothes. Plus I'm at the age were I feel sexier not showing skin. I love how the silhouette of an outfit could make me feel and look seductive. Again.... it is Vegas.

I was thinking a mini dress like the Ginger with tights and heels or maybe even the Natalie tunic with tights and heels. I'm really not sure. Any suggestions?

Over the past two weeks I have been seriously contemplating everything that has been going on in the world and in my own life. Over the past year I have moved and gotten a new job, had new opportunities shown to me and missed out on some. I have made new friends and lost some. I've been through some rough patches and have floated on cloud nine. But the thing that strikes me most about the past year is how people keep on keepin' on.

I think I speak for us all when I say that the past year has be a tumultuous one. We have all endured hardships, whether it be personal, professional, or financial and I am amazed that people are still moving forward. Human kind as a whole has made it a social responsibility to keep on living for the sake of humanity.

And in saying this we are each responsible for how the next year treat us. We have the choice to break down the door of opportunity or just wait for it to knock. We can each free ourselves from our limitations. For me this means being more creative and doing something each day that I am passionate about. It means knowing that my friends are my family here in San Francisco, and treasuring each moment I spend with them. And finally, it means being a proud supporter of the local artistic community and the people that live and work in the city.

I have decided not to make a general resolution this year because I know it takes conscious decisions everyday to make change happen. I'm determined to create the year that I want. I wont wait for anyone or anything to make me happy. I will make myself happy.

I will make 2009 my year.

A Man of Style

Recently, I've been thinking a lot about personal style -- how it is formed, how it evolves, and how those evolutions reflect different areas of our life. It seems that lots of girls begin learning lessons from their mothers. Opinions about makeup, dresses, matching shoes, handbags and countless other details are shaped by watching them get ready to go out to dinner with their friends, or get dressed up for work.

On my way to work today, during our standard mid-morning pep talk, I realized how much my Dad actually set the groundwork for my personal style.

Like anyone else, my look has changed throughout the years. Throughout high school and college, I was a Gap posterchild -- stonewashed denim, neutrals, basic black, and for a spell, really into clunky ankle-boots and skirts. I still miss a favorite pair of Gap wide-legged jeans that I wore to a late 90's, soft, washed out perfection. In the last few years, I've embraced color in a real way: loving bright graphic prints, more-than-dabbling-in neon and sprinkling my wardrobe with metallics.

However, the formative ideas that my Dad instilled are in place. My Dad loves "gear" - and has collected every variety, from raincoats to sub-zero parkas, balaclavas in several colors to fine English tweed scarves. Through me, his tastes have produced a love for outerwear of all kinds (I'm obsessed with jackets) - and a nuanced attention to down fill, fleece pile, and any number of other details. After proclaiming that his #1 fashion pet-peeve was "contrast color topstitching", I am forever scrutinizing those tiny threads for color compatibility.

He also instilled a interest in fashion history, and has greatly enhanced my knowledge of revered houses of style. On a family trip to Europe, I remember receiving a detailed history of Liberty fabrics in London, and walking through the Place Vendôme in Paris with equal wonder as when walking through Notre Dame. To him, these stops on our tourist route were just as important as the museums and the monuments. Now, I see the correlation between my current love for color and the brilliant silk ties and cotton shirts at Charvet.

We thank our parents for many things throughout our lives - confidence, courage, and a comfortable home are just a few on the ever-evolving list. I feel especially thankful to my Dad for the things he taught me -- and not just for the ability to name-drop or spout off obscure fashion knowledge. What I'm most grateful for is the love and appreciation of the beautiful things in the world. Fine craftsmanship, centuries old-traditions, and the classic things that never go out of style. Families who have devoted their lives to making clothes for generations, despite changes in fashion, political upheavals, and yes, recessions.

So thanks Dad!! For being my unconventional, but essential, fashion role-model.

Where Los Angeles Meets San Francisco

Chinatown, of course.

Both SF and LA house a historic Chinatown - the slightly seedy yet eclectic side of the tracks, where anything can happen – and does.

Nothing exemplifies the mood of Chinatown like the movie of the same name, a 1974 film directed by Roman Polanski starring a roguish Jack Nicholson and a stunning Faye Dunaway. It’s my favorite movie of all time. Not even considering ironic points of convergence between the plot and real life (Dunaway’s character, the tragic Evelyn Mulwray, is abused sexually by her sinister father; Polanski himself was accused of similar heinous acts), the film has a surprising depth. Couple that with a flawless execution and plenty of close-ups of Faye’s perfectly tweezed brows and moody lips, and you have a delightful - if not dark - viewing experience.

The beauty of 1970s Los Angeles area itself is a large part of the film – a backdrop that encroaches with each oncoming scene. Evelyn’s wardrobe is a perfect parallel to what 70s era LA was (or, much like Dunaway’s character, what it wanted to convey): crisp white shirts that perfectly reflected the sun, over-sized sunglasses that hinted at mystery, and silky floor-length dresses (or are they negligees?) that whispered about possibility and unprecedented prowess .

Which brings me again to where Los Angeles and San Francisco meet: Sunhee Moon, via Chinatown.

So it's 2009! In with the new and out with the old!

I've been looking at my closet lately and I'm starting to weed out what I love and absolutely have to get rid of. Then I start thinking of what I need to buy to replace what I'm throwing out. Plus with what's going on in the world (I'm not going to say it), just like everyone else... I'm a little hesitant to spend money.

Though I've come to a decision that if and when I do buy new clothes, I'm going to spend local and not buy disposable clothing. I feel like I spend more money on inexpensive clothes that will last for a few months. I end up giving it to goodwill or throwing it away. Then I go out and buy more, rather fewer but better quality clothes. Genuine leather handbags or soft Brazilian leather shoes are definitley worth it.

I hear so many girls say that our clothes are too basic or too plain, but what do we wear more often. Basics that go with everything... that will last a life time? Or trendy tops and dresses that we wear only on certain occasions? I end up trying to sell it to consignment stores that doesn't give back what it's worth. Plus our clothes feels like it's tailor made for every girl.

With that said... I can't wait to buy the Sabine dress! We just did a re cut of it and I'm counting my pennies! It's a classic! Oh... and to the girls that know me.... I'm cleaning out my closet. Hint...hint...!

Cashmere VS. Pashmina

This time of year all a women wants is to surround herself in a luxurious cashmere shawl. But why do we only hunt for Pashminas, and if they are supposed to be so rare and expensive, why do they seem to invade every store on Fisherman's Wharf? And why can one feel like paper and the other feel like, well, cashmere? I'm here to end the questions and let you know what the deal really is with these so called "Pashminas."

But we can't do that without a little history. Cashmere comes from the Cashmere goat, which is indigenous to the high altitudes of the Himalayas around Mongolia, Iran, and Afganistan. Cashmere is known for its soft hand and ability to keep warmth in. The Cashmere fiber is finer and less coarse than other types of wool making it more sought after in colder climates. Pashmina, on the other hand, is a type of wool from a specific type of Cashmere goat. These goats are not from Kashmir or Nepal, where similar weaving techniques are often used in the making of shawls and wraps.

The term Pashmina becomes even more specific in the type of methods used to make this shawl. Authentic Pashminas are made by hand using traditional methods, not the modern day spinning techniques that the Europeans introduced after finding this fine fiber. Today pashmina is the term given to any shawl from this goat with knotted fringe at the end.

Both cashmere and pashmina may be blended with other fibers, such as silk and wool to create blends. These additions change the hand and warmth of the garment. The hand may also change with quality of cashmere wools, the lower the quality the more coarse and wool-like the texture will be. Of course this affects the price as well.

If you ask me, any type of cashmere feels like a luxury.

Just home from work, almost out the door to an art sale in the Mission,then meeting friends for dinner, I send the following text & photo to my best friend / fashion kindred spirit in New York:

Is it too much?

I was feeling a bit ubiquitous with my knit cap, patterned scarf, leather bomber, skirt, tights and boots. But I just can't help myself! With so many beautiful clothes out there that harken back to the 60's and 70's, I find myself "dressing up" a bit more than usual. I know some of Sunhee's main influences come from films, and I'm totally following suit, obsessing over French New Wave-esque outfits. Sometimes in the morning I'll get up and ask myself: What would I wear if I were a Godard character?

At the same time that I love that classic style, I'm also really intrigued by all things retro-futuristic. Quirky colors like neon or chartreuse, pointed shoulders, and dramatic, geometric lines are making me warp my wardrobe into that of some Jetsons-era secretary with a thing for a 1970s color palette.

So sometimes it may be a bit much, but I believe that inspiration is such an important part of the way you dress. It helps to adopt an alternate attitude or persona to match your outfit, especially on tough days at work or when you're out on a first date. Choose wisely, whether your inspiration is strong, sweet, quirky, or serious, make sure it brings you confidence and makes you happy!

Truth: Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.
I live for the opportunity to give schmaltzy speeches about the people and things I am thankful for, and if I can be drinking wine and eating delicious food while I do so, then all the better.

While I love the winter holidays for their long seasons of festivity, quite frankly, they make me anxious. How do I translate my genuine feelings of thanks and well-wishing into gifts to those I love? It's a quagmire I run into every year, and I know I'm not alone.

So in the spirit of helping others (and coaching myself through the gift-giving process at the same time) I've complied a list of gift ideas for the holidays!

First -- Shop LOCALLY.
Working at Sunhee Moon has made supporting local businesses super important to me. What better way to celebrate the beautiful, dynamic, and unique place we live than to buy gifts from local merchants? I say pick up a Coco Cowl for your stylish loved ones chez nous during one of the many community shopping nights taking place this month.
On Friday December 5, the Lower Haight is having a shopping block party. Peruse shops in the neighborhood that was home to the original Sunhee Moon boutique!

On Saturday December 6, check out Fillmore's street-wide charity event for Goodwill. First, donate clothes at a participating store, then reap the benefits of special discounts after you're done!

On Friday December 12, head to the Mission for live entertainment, door prizes, discounts and drink specials at the boutiques around 16th Street. With a hot chocolate from Ritual in hand, the night couldn't get much better.

SECOND -- Support Your Friends!
In a city like this, chances are you know people doing some pretty incredible things. Whether they're aspiring chefs honing their skills at a great restaurant or hardworking fundraisers for a nonprofit organization, why not honor their contributions with gifts for others? Try buying gift certificates to restaurants where your friends work for your co-workers, or making charitable contributions to nonprofits in your family member's names.
For example, this year, I'm going to buy gifts from the Global Exchange Online Store that my friend Abby runs!

THIRD -- Support the Arts!
Ok, I'm probably biased, but I think there are some great arts organizations in this city that deserve our support. They make our city a more vibrant, open, and creative place by supporting artists and reaching out to underserved communities. Plus, their employees seem to love Sunhee Moon too.... :)
Some of my local favorites include... Southern Exposure, The LAB, and Headlands Center for the Arts.

I hope this little guide has helped or at least started the wheels turning for your holiday shopping. I say avoid downtown and see what your neighborhood has to offer instead! You might just suprise yourself with a new reason to be thankful :)

The Donna Dress

Okay. So I know I rave about a lot of the things Sunhee makes. And I'm starting to wonder if we should each make a "style guide" for each of the Moongirls who works here, because yes yes, I admit, I tend towards the dresses, tunics, with skinny pants or leggings underneath. This is because my midsection is (though no one ever believes me!) the biggest part of my body and when that is the case, us ladies with the tubby tummy need to keep that part hidden!!

My favorite strategies for slimming an ample waist:
1. Open neck tunic styles with ruched or pleated middles.
I'd say 50% of my wardrobe consists of this kind of tunic or dress. Why? It's fitted up top, with a flattering neckline which draws attention to a beautiful collarbone, and then airs out in gathered fabric so you don't have to worry about grabbing that extra hamburger or two. :P Pair it with some Mick Skinny Pants, EG Tights, or knee-high boots and you are sure to turn heads.

2. Belts
Yes ladies, I know it sounds counterintuitive, but the BEST thing you can do for a larger waist, is belt it. Belt it at your "true waist" (i.e. the smallest part of your midsection, not necessarily where your bellybutton is). I was an unbeliever for many years, and almost remained so until a wholesale seller in Korea showed me different. Ignore the belt loops where manufacturers are trying to convince your piece of leather or fabric to go; Just loop it where you are smallest, and you have yourself a totally brand new outfit. Accessories are the quickest way to spice up an old look, and belts are in this year, so why not?

3. Jumpers
Same idea as the ruched gathered front dress. If your limbs are long and slender, it's those limbs you see when you throw on a jumper or tunic sweater. Add a Kendra button-down shirt and loafers underneath (don't forget that belt if you want an extra splash of color and a little cinching!) Block out the body, show off the arms/legs.

4. Color-Blocking
Speaking of blocking, this is one of those fashion tips that never dies. Wear the same color to create an overall slimming effect. Problem is, I get bored in just one color. Instead, try a long-sleeve Aude Welch tee in black, Andy Skirt in Lavender (or any color you want), black EG Tights and maybe some Oneska Tiger trainers with a dash of color and you have yourself the slim without the monotone. The trick is to start with a base color head-to-toe, then change out one element, preferably midway through just to keep things interesting.

Man. I got sidetracked. So what I REALLY wanted to talk about was the Donna Dress. Because this is a classic example of Joyce Style Tip #1. Cowl open-neck, pleated front, gathered ruching around the middle in a elegant light-weight jersey knit. So easy. So so easy. Add a Kristin Kahle reversible skinny belt, and you look like you write for Vogue. Spice it up with printed stockings or whatever else you have in your closet from the funky 80s. This is a great dress. PERIOD.

Britni's Must Have's for the Season

Everytime the season changes we must quickly adapt before it gets the better of our wardrobe. In San Francisco that means for Spring its putting away those wool coats and stationing your Wellies and umbrella right by the door. When summer starts we can finally put our rainboots aways and reach for those dresses and sandals, but not before we grab a scarf and sweater for the evening. In Indian Summer we lose all sense of reality because of the heat and adventure about in shorts and miniskirts, jumpers and knits, anything to keep us cool. Slowly but surely the indian summer will give way to fall and we shake our heads look at our feet and put those gladiator sandals to rest in our closets. We once again remember we live in the city by the bay and need to prepare before the winter officially takes over the city.

This is my favorite season, crisp, sunny days are strewn about the months of November and December in between bouts of rain. Just as we forecast the weather I love to forcast the trends for this time each year. Here's the ones I'll be following in the months to come.

Ill be buying brightly colored tights in bulk and layering them with everything. Take it from me, walking from Fillmore to the TL is no picnic, I want all the layers I can get! I love oversized chunky sweaters, they make a silk dress look romantic or just bundle you up in your jeans and boots. If there is one dress I am going to buy this season it is going to be Sunhee Moons Donna Dress. It is so easy to wear, the cotton/jersey and elasticized waist is forgiving on every body type and the pleating detail and portrait-ish collar is elegant enough to wear to dinner at Jardiniere in Hayes valley. Ill also be seen in anything hi-waisted, this I belive is the biggest trend of the season. Jeans, skirts, natural waisted dresses, like the Donna Dress, are EVERYWHERE and I can't get enough. To top it all off accessories will make the outfit. Chunky, multi-chain, multi-metal necklaces that give the feeling of edgy luxury, a bright pair of heels to give our dark fall wardrobe a spark of color and oversized shoulder strap handbags. So much easier to ride the bus and grab groceries when you bag is out of mind. Another trend I feel is going to be strong this winter is hats. Wear them ladies and where them proud! Im not speaking of the oh so overly worn Fedora, experiment with different syles, different decades, and different ethnic pieces to bring the finishing touches to that look.

Whichever styles you decide to follow be daring and creative. Use inspiration to define your style. Just make it your own like we do here at Sunhee Moon and you'll be stylin'!

I was never good at the layering thing until I moved to San Francisco. Living in Gilroy all my life where in the summer you would live in a swimsuit and in the winter only had to go shopping for a new sweatshirt to keep warm was not good for my laying abilities. So when I moved up here, I had no clue what to do. I find too that many other women have had the same dilema as I. Well, let me just tell you that there is hope. If I can do it so can you, and the first key is thin warmth.

Let me just tell you that yes, that hand knitted angora sweater looks great, but really doesn't fit under your wool winter coat, and with a scarf on you can barely see your head. Now like all fashionista we want to be warm and still look smokin' hot during the wintertime. (But not like a marshmellow) That is where the first key comes in, invest in some very fine knits. Cashmere and cotton come in very fine gauge knits and are popping up everywhere for fall. Maybe a cashemere turtle kneck to layer under those tunics from the summer or a long sleeve cotton top to put underneath your button downs. Thats the first step. Just one extra layer close to your skin will help protect you from the frost.

The second step is to make sure that you are covered from head to toe. This definately doesn't mean that dresses are a big no no for fall and winter, in fact I've seen more dresses this year than ever before. But to keep those gorgous gams from becoming popsicle sticks we suggest leggings. Cashmere leggings are huge and you can find them in all kinds of neutural tones to work with every outfit. Plus they add a little bit of luxury to your outfit and they feel amazing. If your not sure about the investment of cashmere leggings than there is still the good ole' cotton spandex legging availible to all. But my favorite leg covering this year is brightly colored opaque tights. I own a pair in cobalt blue with stirrups at the feet. (Talk about flashback to the eighties!) Every color you can imagine is out there, and they look amazing paired with black, grey or complimentary colors. Paired with a pair of cute flats you have a look that is mod and modern at the same time.

After you've gotten the first layer down you can add anything you would normally wear in the warmer weather. My favorite thing to layer is tunics, the bright summer colors really look great against the darker fall tones of black and grey. That pop of color really stands out. The last thing I would suggest are some great accessories. A scarf or cowl knit, maybe a sweater vest for just one more layer but super cute and trenty, and a great pair of gloves. Whether you go with leather or cashmere look for a pair that has a little bit of playfulness and it will set you apart from the other gloved hands.

With those couple of tips you should be set to stay warm and look hot this winter!!!

You wake up at 6am or maybe 6:30 to roll out of bed in your gym clothes (because you don't have time to change into them, so you might as well sleep in them too). You walk to the gym and workout for a precious 45 minutes. Get home - jump in the shower, make-up, clothes... 0h drink a tall glass of water in the process of getting ready, because you know you're going to drink a Venti while on route to work.

Ughhh.... keys! Where are your keys?!

Finally leave the house. Stop by at Fayes for java and you're on your way to work! Your days don't end til 8pm. Your weekends are spent with your family, kids, and friends visiting from out of town. Or you have to see that concert in Golden Gate park.

But wait? No time for SHOPPING?!!! Even though each day you walk by your favorite boutique and admire the window displays? Silly.

Tights are tight

As soon as I get a hit of crisp air, or feel a leaf crunch unexpectedly under my boots, something in my body chemistry changes. I'm a New Yorker, born and raised upstate, and the fall has always been a time of great excitement for me. Even as a kid, I looked forward to beautiful orange and red trees, leaf piles, fresh apples and walks in the woods with my family. What I realize now, thousands of miles and many years away, is that I also always looked forward to fall clothing -- sweaters, jackets, and especially, tights.

Here at work I always suggest tights to customers looking to spice up an Andy skirt or add some texture to an Elise or Ginger dress. Tights are an easy and inexpensive way to change your look, and there are so many hosiery options out now that experimentation is part of the fun! Sure, a basic skirt looks beautiful with a pair of plain brown tights. But add a patterned tight or a delicate knit stocking, and the look totally changes.

At Sunhee Moon we carry EG Smith tights, which are super durable, one-size-fits-all, and come in a variety of colors. They're totally opaque, so even if you're wearing a tiny mini, you feel covered up and classy. My favorite combination so far has been the black Ginger dress with the purple EG tights. I know Sunhee Moon is about all of us Moongirls who work here, but imagine my surprise (I was genuinely flattered), when I happened over to Yelp.com and saw that someone had included me in their Union St. review (4 stars)! Whenever I can help a customer find the exact size, fit, and look that they feel radiant in, I go home feeling as good as they do in their new clothes!

So despite an overcast day at Union, reading those kind words definitely made my day a little brighter. Hope we can continue to serve all of you radiant ladies of SF (and the world)!

Well, can I say that I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of the lucky few to include their thoughts to the Sunhee Moon blog. Working here these past few weeks has really inspired me to rethink my wardrobe and its endless possibilities. My creative streak has definately taken over in the morning as I shuffle my clothes around in my closet. As every girl here will tell you, Im a dress girl, not pants, not tunics, or skirts. Just give me a dress and I'll be happy. Part of being a dress girl is that once summer is over, I retire them sadly to the back of the closet and bring out my heavy jackets and wool pants thinking "I can't wear this its too cold outside."

At this moment in my thought process my creativity takes over. Why don't I style my dresses the same way I style all the Sunhee Moon girls! Like pairing the Houndstooth Elise dress with the red Tomo or the beautiful new Sabine dress with tights and boots! And the Mirabel dress looks great with a turtleneck, a wrap sweater and ankle boots. So romantic! Or how about the Sarah dress as a trench over our Charlene pants and Lani top. There is just so many options! I think this year my favorite thing about fall is the same as my favorite thing for summer.....the dresses!

New Dilemmas for Joyce

So Berkeley got started again a few weeks ago (I'm in graduate school there), and the start of something is always a little stressful. Having to adjust, getting accustomed to the rigors of academic life, and now that I'm commuting in from the city every day, it's important that I get to that Transbay Terminal BEFORE the bus leaves. (Duh. Though it hasn't happened every time.)

But what presents an even BIGGER dilemma (Yes, yes, it really does) are all the new things we've been getting into the store recently! You know, so I always have a list in my head of "I am only going to buy one thing per month, and this is it." And with every new item added to my Sunhee Moon Collection, I pre-emptively believe, "Phew! Check that one off!" thinking that my list has gotten smaller.

Well.

I am wrong.

Ladies, we just got in the Sabine Dress in Gabardine, in a chocolate and grey, and if you thought the Melanie Dress was the perfect professional suit replacement, well, hello Sabine! She is the remake of an enduring classic, a boatneck silhouette with darts and princess seams that falls to below the knee (there are some of us whose knees were never meant to be seen after one too many falls off the snowboard), with the trademark Sunhee Moon optional tie waist and pockets. Seriously, Sunhee. Can't we just stop making new things that look good on women (for the sake of my bank account)? I am a poor grad student. Whine whine.

Even the new Keelyn Top in black, white, and DENIM is like our Stella with a twist. A twist that poor student Joyce happens to like. I need to start working overtime or something hahaha.

EVERYTHING!!! It's all about layering and my COCO COWL! Love it! Totally can be worn with anything. As a cowl, a scarf, a hood inside my jacket. So versatile, so unique, and not a lot of girls have it. What the?????!!! Better get yours ladies before it's all gone!

So........ some one's birthday's Wednesday.......! Yes yes... I'm also a Virgo. You know sophisticated, clean, simple, colorful. Kinda like the SUNHEE MOON brand. aha!

I'm a true believer in the cosmic world. It may sound silly, but I guarantee I'm not the only one. I constantly check my horoscope, ask other people what their sign is and try to figure out why certain signs don't connect. Funny cause my brother and I have the same initials and both are Virgos'. Most of my best friends are Virgos' as well. I remember one year we had a Virgo party just cause their were so many of us.

Awe... talk about signs... I miss Caroline! She knew everything about the Zodiac. If you told her what sign you were, she'd break it down!
Any who! What am I going to do that day........? The only plan really is to get a Spa Mani/Pedi and other than that..... no planning dinners or drinks. Too complicated. I'm just gonna roll with it and do whatever I want.

"Is this a shirt or a dress?"

Haha, after reading Andie's post about the "Tuck-In" (which I found brilliant btw), I wanted to continue the theme of "bringing back the 80's." This might not be that new to any of you folks, and in fact, I'm pretty sure this trend has been going on for the last couple of years, but remember leggings? Tights? Remember leggings underneath plastic shorts? I definitely donned that happening look all through elementary school, including the oversized baggy t-shirt scrunched up in a knot.

Luckily, I don't do the gigantic shirt that makes it seems like you have nothing on underneath, but I definitely wear all my Sunhee Moon favorites with leggings or skinny pants to give the look an update and to emphasize zee legs (for any of us long-legged ladies out there). The Patricia Tunic in tree and dandelion prints look great on their own, but they certainly do get dressed up with a lovely sateen and suede Tomo Sash. And while we're at it, why not, throw on the Mick Skinny Pant and you have a completely cute outfit. My new Elise Shirtdress is another I love adding skinny pants and heels to, especially for a night out. Love that Ginger Dress with the gathered waist. Add a chunky belt and knee high cowboy boots and you're ready to roll. Even the Natalie Tunic (all colors on sale!) takes on a whole other feel when you add some tights and a long-sleeved layering tee beneath it.

When ladies ask me that all-too-common phrase, "Is this a shirt or a dress?" My favorite answer is "Both!" In actuality, what I love about the clothes at Sunhee Moon is that you can make it whatever you want it to be, nothing is supposed to be done in any way, except the way that fits you best. So c'mon Sunhee Moon ladies! Show me the best way to tie that Tomo, or how you wear that Natalie! We love learning all the cute ways you make these clothes your own.

The Tuck-In Is Back!!

So I've been working at Sunhee Moon for about two months now and decided it's time to write a blog. I realized something this week and I wanted I'd share it with all of our friends reading out in internet-land. At some point in the late 90s (I think...) tucking in tops to your shorts, pants or skirts became a big fashion "no-no."For some reason though, the tuck-in is back and cuter than ever! I can't stop tucking my tops in whether just a tshirt or a fun blouse (like the Larabee top I finally bought and LOVE!) into my skirts, jeans, or even shorts! What helps the tuck-in even more is belts! I've been eyeing the Kristin Kahle single ring belts. Sooo cute!! I'm not sure why it's okay now, and wasn't, say, 2 years ago, but the tuck-in is a fashion YES I'm willing to don until it inevitably gets cycled back into the list of faux pas.

You felt a strong desire to get a pedicure.
Windows are open, birds are chirping, dogs are happy....this could only mean one thing...
IT'S HOT !!!

Courtesy of the Sunhee Moon girls, here's a list of great things to do on a sunny day in (and around) the city!

- Go fly a kite on the Marina Green.
- Cruise Union Street with a sandwich and "perfectly blended Coke" (according to Andie) from Marina Sub.
- Rent a paddle boat at Stow Lake in Golden Gate park. Bring some vino!
- Release your inner 7-year-old: Find sprinklers in parks and run through them!
- Get sandy. Baker, Stinson, or Black Sands Beach.
- Have a ferry good time. Pick up some tasty delights at the Ferry Building then ride a ferry to Sausalito or Larkspur.
- Play bocce at Crissy Field.
- We love the Mission. Sit outside at Zeigeist with a tall Margarita or a Bloody Mary. Enjoy a delicious ice cream cone or popsicle from Bi-Rite Creamery at Dolores Park. Walk through Clarion Alley. Eat ceviche at a Mom & Pop cafe on Mission.
- Challenge your roommate to a tennis match, in honor of the US Open.
- Hunt for undiscovered musical gems and enjoy the cool sonic warehouse that is Amoeba Music on Haight St.
- Take a little hike at Land's End.
- Check out the Victory Garden at City Hall. Look for Gavin!

Purple Rain

You don't need to convince me that purple is a hot color for Fall.

It's showing up in fashion spreads, on the street, and right here at Sunhee Moon, in the form of soft cashmere-blend tops and cute wool mittens. Its bold, feminine, and of course, regal. But purple has won a special place in my heart, thanks to a recent viewing of the movie "Purple Rain", Prince's early 80's musical motorcycle masterpiece.

Up until now, I never considered myself a Prince "fan". Sure I knew his music; I have danced and sang along to "Little Red Corvette" countless times and partied like it was 1999 since, well, maybe 1998. However, last week I went to my favorite coffee shop (Ritual Coffee Roasters in the Mission) before work and heard the Purple Rain soundtrack playing on the stereo. This triggered Prince in my mind, and introduced me to songs I hadn't heard before (Take Me With U, for example). I was craving his music after that, and decided to rent the movie last night to satiate my need.

My interest in movies usually revolves around the costumes. No big surprise there. And Purple Rain did not disappoint. Those Renaissance/Futuristic jackets in purple taffeta! High-waisted pants with metal studs all the way down the leg! Poet blouses with high necks and ruffled collars! Plus the crazy hair and high-heeled boots. It was too much, in the best way possible.

Sure, the plot is weak and the acting is mediocre. But watching Prince ride around like a twenty-first century troubadour around rural Minnesota on his motorcycle MORE THAN makes up for all of that.

Inspiration comes from strange places. Maybe I'm a jumping on the Prince bandwagon a little late, but better late than never! When I woke up this morning there was no question about what I was wearing... a purple shirt, and my purple suede flats. No poet blouses or leather slouch knee-boots for work, but maybe Halloween, if I can get my hands on them.

So here I am on my day off at our Fillmore store with one of my fave girls, Casey F.! It is a bit nostalgic to remember the first time I walked into a Sunhee Moon store (it happened to be this very one!), and had a lovely chat with Casey about becoming a Moongirl. She encouraged me through the entire process, and I even remember reading her blog entry prior to our first meeting - recounting her own thoughts on being in the 16th St. store on her day off, because this is a place that is positive, vibrant, and filled with women who are empowered, who set their sights high, who are not afraid to achieve their life goals and dreams.

Even when some days feel longer than others, the one thing I love about working at Sunheemoon is that we are a community of intelligent yet laidback, fun and fashion-conscious (er, I say that tongue-in-cheek about myself :P) women who are beautiful inside and out, and it is a joy to be a part of that.

I'm not sure how you, our wonderful clientele, feel when you walk into one of our stores, but I hope you find the clothes that fit, that empower you, that exemplify the best and the brightest of your spirit as you "work it" (haha) in your everyday life.

P.S. Every time I write a corny blog post, which essentially, is every single one I write, I want to add a disclaimer of embarrassment and acknowledgment that yes, I know I am extremely corny. My excuse for today is that my sister just called to let me know she is on her way with my brother-in-law to the hospital, where my baby niece is about to be born! So I am in a "celebration of life" kind of mood right now! :)

P.P.S. I must add, my current Moon crush is on the brand new Coco Cowl, a faux cowlneck scarf that turns any top into a mysterious yet playful neckwarmer that perfectly frames all the cute chins around San Francisco.

East Coast Whirl

While Casey and Vanessa have been able to check out the latest Sunheemoon fashions on the West Coast, I've been over in New York City and Baltimore, doing a bit of budget shopping of my own. My favorite spot by far has definitely been on the Lower East Side on Broome and Orchard St, where I stumbled upon a brand new (10 days old) local boutique called Lael, showcasing the designs of recent Parsons and F.I.T. graduates. I was also a fan of Moo Shoes, a vegan-friendly shoe and accessory retailer with their own meowing Moo mascots inside. On the recommendation of my sister and brother-in-law, I hopped on over to Il Laboratorio Del Gelato, where I snagged an amazing bite of Amaretto Crunch and a tub of Hazelnut to take home for later. Barrio Chino, a neighborhood hangout with an incredible Enchilada Mole and dazzling Mojitos where I met up with an old college friend, was the perfect way to end the evening.

But the highlight of my trip had to be when I donned my Patricia tunic in B&W Dandelion for the first time on my way to the Museum of Natural History. My 32-year-old brother, who himself is a fan of free t-shirts from web start-up companies, who also had to be tricked into buying jeans that were not 2 sizes too large, even commented, "Wow, Joyce. What a nice dress!"

When my computer science brother notices design, you know it's gotta be good. And with our Emma and Gloria Ruffle Tops marked down to unspeakable prices (haha, just go check out the site), I can't wait to be back in the Bay to snag my next compliment (via Sunhee's choiciest cuts and eye-catching fabrics) from this ole brother o'mine!

My pick of the week would have to be The Sarah dress!

Sunhee recut them in Navy, Cranberry, Apple and Putty... oops almost forgot black. It's so comfortable and can be worn many different ways. One... by itself to work, two... wear it as a jacket and three... wear it with knee high boots and a turtleneck underneath for those cold, foggy days. You could even take off the belt that comes with it and add a skinny belt or a different colored Tomo belt.

I'm still trying to figure out what color I want. Maybe Apple cause I have a darker skin tone and that could brighten me up or....... Navy cause it has a clean sophisticated shine to it.

What color should I get??!!!

Chilly Days

It's been so cold lately in San Francisco, but that's nothing new. Sometimes it's hard to keep warm and look fashionable at the same time- you can end up looking poofy with all the layers. However, with Sunhee Moon clothes, it's quite easy to be warm, toasty and chic at the same time. Just pair a long sleeve black turtle neck with the Sarah dress and slap on some knee high boots to add a bit of sexiness. The Sarah dress functions in two ways. One as a coat and the other as a shirt dress that"s perfect for work or going out. It has a sateen finish on it so it gives off a great sheen. The weather shouldn't prevent us from looking fab, you just need the right clothes!

Casey's Pick of the Week

Alright, I hate to sound like the super-conservative girl who only wears corduroy skirts. In the last few months, my fashion explorations have taken me into the Olympian realms of bronze American Apparel leggings, metallic silver ankle-strap flats, and gold gladiator sandals. But every stylish girl knows that when you find a great basic, you've really hit the jackpot.

That said, the Andy skirt is my new favorite. When it first came in, I was enamored of it's comfy fit and smoky blue color. Now that I've made it my own, it's versatility has proved it to be a great buy, over and over again. Last week I wore it with an Aude t-shirt, brown tights and my brown leather boots. Today it's working wonders for my blue oxford, navy Tom's, and a red scarf for a cold day in the Marina. A little bit preppy, a little bit back-to-school. I'm excited to wear it with sweaters and warm tights in the winter.

To recap: soft cord, fun colors, and a great fit. This skirt is a dream!
